We Answer Frequently Asked Questions About Fencing Products and Services

  • How Long does it take to build a fence?

The time to install events varies depending on factors such as property size or terrain complexity. However, we can construct most fences in 1-3 days from the start of the project.

  • What type of Fence should I get?

First, ask yourself, “Why do I need a fence?” The answers to that question are typically any or all of these:

    • To keep your kids and pets safe and protected.
    • To define property boundaries.
    • To secure private property/protect it from theft.
    • For personal privacy or to screen other properties from your view.

Many types of fences may satisfy your needs:

Chain link fences  can work for all 4 of the above needs. A galvanized chain link is the most economical. Black, vinyl-coated chain link has become very popular and looks very nice, almost ornamental in appearance. You can add slats to the chain link to make it a privacy fence or fabric as a wind and privacy screen. Chain link fences are usually 3 to 6 feet tall for residential applications and 6 to 8 feet tall for commercial applications. They go up from there for pickleball courts, basketball courts, and baseball backstops.

Privacy fences can meet all the needs and are usually made of wood  or vinyl. They are typically 4 to 6 feet tall.

Ornamental fences work for the first three needs and are typically made of prefabricated steel or aluminum panels

Split Rail/Ranch fences are suitable for defining property boundaries, though some can keep cows or horses contained. They are typically made of wood or vinyl

Semi-privacy fences are typically used for all four needs, though there are gaps between the privacy slats that allow air to flow but negate the “full privacy” function. These types of fences are typically made of wood or vinyl. The privacy slats can usually be installed vertically or horizontally. The horizontal type has become quite popular in recent years.

Solid privacy fences fit all four needs and are very popular. They are typically made of wood or vinyl. Certain city or property association regulations may prevent you from placing a privacy fence exactly where you’d like. Most cities won’t allow privacy fences to extend into front yards. Wood is typically the most affordable, followed by vinyl and metal.

Farm and Ranch fence styles are very specific to your needs regarding function or livestock. For example, we are a Centaur product dealer specializing in horse fence solutions. We also have solutions for goats, chickens, horses, and other critters of all sorts.

  • What are property pins?

Property pins are typically a piece of steel rebar with a yellow cap set on top of each corner of your property. They are markers to identify where your property starts and stops.

  • Do I need a survey before installing my fence?

Surveying your property is the only sure way of identifying your property boundaries. Though a survey is not typically required, it is highly recommended.

Huber Fencing will look for your property pins at the time of your estimate. We prefer to find 3 out of the 4 pins; if we cannot do that, we may recommend a survey if your boundaries need clarification.

  • Do I need a fence permit?

Every municipality has a different permit process. Some cities/towns (municipalities) do not require a permit, while others do. Huber Fencing takes on the responsibility of obtaining the necessary permit for you.

  • Do I need to call 811 (Iowa One Call) before you install my fence?

NO.  As a certified contractor for the state of Iowa, Huber Fencing must do this before installing a fence.
